THE MAASAI MARA NATIONAL PARK

Lake Nakuru National Park in the environs of the city of Nakuru is 188km2. It provides sanctuary to one of the largest populations of rhinos as well as the Rothschild giraffe.

Described as the newest seventh wonder of the world, the Maasai Mara meaning “dotted plain” is a natural enigma with its vastness a charging landscape as you drive by the hills wooded areas and the savannah intertwined together with the backdrop of mountains is in complete harmony is a sight to behold.

The Mara has an amazing concentration of wildlife in their undiluted natural habitat which is a sight to behold particularly with the 2million migratory wildebeest between June and October accompanied by half a million common zebras and gazelles; followed by the 3big cats, the lion, leopard and cheetah. In style, who are predators following their food and the accompanying scavengers. I would call this; “the theatre of the wild,” not to mention the crocodiles of the Mara floating in the river waiting for early Christmas.

The Mara is replete with all kinds of animals and birds and this is the place where you will spot the big five easily. Big herds of African plain elephants, the shy black rhino, the sly leopard, the superfast cheetah and ultimately the king of the jungle will be spotted here.

It’s an alkaline lake which attracts flamingos which generally feed on the gree algae that grows in this lake.
The park is home to over 450 species of birds and therefore a bird watches paradise. The park is home to all but one of the big five namely the elephant. Large herds of zebras, the African buffaloes, waterbucks and various gazelles and impalas can be spotted here with the baboon cliff and the out of Africa viewpoints you can see the whole lake and most of the beautiful scenery of rolling hills and plain surrounding the lake. There are various picnic sites and public and special camping sites for the camping enthusiast. There are also various top of the range hotels and lodges inside the park.
